The figure shows the brass link labeled 1 and the steel rod labeled 2. The reference datum is a vertical line passing through the left inside edge of the brass link. The brass link and the steel rod are elongated by delta subscript 2. The length of the steel rod exceeds the inside length of the brass link by 0.2 millimeters. Delta subscript 1 is 0.2 millimeters larger than delta subscirpt 2.

From this geometric relationship of the deformations in the link and the rod, we can now state the geometry of deformation equation:
