The flexure formula is used to determine the bending stress in the beam. To use this formula, three values are needed:
(3) the distance from the centroidal axis to the extreme fiber of the cross section.
Since bending stress is distributed linearly over the depth of the cross section, the maximum bending stress will occur at the farthest point from the neutral axis.
