This sketch could lead one to conclude that the shear force tends to separate the two channels vertically and that the bolts act in tension to keep the channels firmly connected back-to-back.
This is a misconception.
The shear force actually causes the two channels to slide horizontally relative to each other. The reason for this behavior can be understood from a free-body diagram of one of the channels.
