Coordinate axes are established for the stress element. A right-handed coordinate system is used; therefore, the third axis (i.e., the z axis) is directed out of the plane of the drawing.

Each face of the stress element is identified by its outward normal.

Keep in mind that the stress element is understood to be a three-dimensional block having thickness in the out-of-plane direction even though it is shown as a two-dimensional square.
