The transverse shear stress formula is used to determine the shear stress in the beam. To use this formula, four values are needed:

(4) the width of the section perpendicular to the direction of the shear force at the point where the shear stress τ is to be calculated.

The width of the cross section at the neutral axis is needed for this case.
