The principal stresses and the maximum shear stress can be determined from the stress transformation equations directly or through the use of the Mohr's circle graphical interpretation of these same equations.

In either approach, it is not sufficient to simply report the numerical principal stress and maximum shear stress values. Generally, these values are reported by means of a sketch that shows the critical stresses as well as the orientation of the planes upon which the critical stresses act.
