Consider the transformation equation for gage c:

εc = εxcos2θc + εysin2θc + γxysinθccosθc

Gage c makes an angle of 120° with the x-axis; therefore:

cosθc = -0.5 and sinθc = 0.866

The strain transformation equation for gage c reduces to:

+625με = (800με)(0.25) + εy(0.75) - γxy(0.433)

We now have two equations in terms of the unknowns εy and γxy. These equations can be solved simultaneously.
