The figure shows a rectangular plate labeled axial member fixed to a gusset plate by means of a pin. The gusset plate is anchored to a column on the left. The axial load, P, on the plate is directed to the right.

One of the most basic connections between structural elements is the pin connection. An axial member, which carries an external force P, must be anchored to a support.

In this simple connection, force P is transmitted to the pin. The pin transmits the force to the gusset plate, and the gusset plate transmits force P to the support column.

In this movie, the normal, shear, and bearing stresses that are developed in the various parts of this connection will be considered.
