
In constructing the shear diagram, start at the left end of the beam (where x = 0) and proceed across the beam to the right. Notice that each shear diagram starts at V = 0 at the left end of the beam and returns to V = 0 at the right end. This always occurs in a properly constructed diagram.
If your shear diagram does not return to V = 0 at the right end of the beam, this indicates that an error has been made. If you've followed the preceding rules correctly, then check your equilibrium calculations to make sure that you've correctly determined the beam reactions.
