Hooke's Law defines the relationship between stress and strain in a material. For stress applied in one direction, Hooke's Law is:

There are many situations in which a material is subjected to stresses from several directions.

For these situations, Hooke's Law can be extended to include biaxial and triaxial states of stress that are often found in engineering structures.
