The figure shows a beam B C supported by a rod A B. The beam is bolted to a pole at C and the rod is bolted to the pole at A. A uniform load w acts on the beam over a length of 3.6 meters from point C. The length of the beam is 5 meters and point A is 3.5 meters below point C.

Three design considerations have been investigated.
1. Based on the allowable normal stress in member (1):

w = 34.08 kN/m

2. Based on the allowable shear stress in bolts A and B:

w = 24.92 kN/m

3. Based on the allowable shear stress in bolt C:

w = 19.05 kN/m

Therefore, the maximum distributed load magnitude w that can be supported by the structure is w = 19.05 kN/m.
