The figure shows a section of a prismatic bar. Equal magnitude loads on either end have magnitude P and are directed away from the surface of the bar. The stresses on a section labeled a a are directed rightwards.

The normal stress acting on section a-a can be calculated from σ=P/A. Section a-a is unique, however, because it is the only surface that is perpendicular to the direction of the force P. A more general case would be to consider a section cut through the bar at an arbitrarily chosen angle.
