To investigate the stresses acting on the inclined plane, the force components of the resultant P that act perpendicular and parallel to the plane must first be determined.

The orientation of the inclined surface can be defined by the angle θ between the x axis and the normal n to section b-b. A positive angle θ is defined as a counterclockwise rotation from the x axis to the n axis.
